The 2025 Special Release from Lagavulin, titled Grain & Embers, is a bold reinterpretation of its classic smoky character. Matured in refill casks and casks seasoned with Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry — a marriage of smoke and rich dried-fruit influence — this expression is bottled at cask strength (approx. 56.5 % ABV). It leans into Lagavulin’s signature peat while layering in unexpected warmth and complexity, creating a dram that feels both familiar and daring.

Tasting Notes

Appearance
Deep amber with reddish glints — full, rich, natural tone.

Aroma
Charcoal‑smoke and bonfire embers sit at the core, overlaid with candied orange peel, raisin, dark plum, and rich toasted cereals. A saline sea breeze drifts in, with hints of wood ash and spiced tobacco.

Palate
Powerful peat smoke arrives first, then gives way to dried fruit sweetness — sultana, black cherry — and nutty sherry notes. Behind it lies dark chocolate, cracked black pepper, leather, and burnt oak. The texture is dense and warming.

Finish
Long and lingering. Smoke and ash return, intertwined with burnt sugar, dried fruit residues, oyster shell salinity, and light warming spice. The tail lingers on an ember‑glow.
